Doug Smith Memorial

Doug sadly passed away on November 8th, 2024 at his home, as was his wish. He was cared for by his family and a wonderful band of helpers in his last weeks and although he has now left us, this small website is to celebrate his life.

Early days

Douglas John Smith, known to most people as Doug, was born on the 23rd of April 1938 at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, West London. His proud parents were George Stanley Smith, usually known as Stan and Annie Smith née Wilkinson, usually known as Nance or Nancy. His early life was tough due to the war but he made the most of it with his education.

Growing up and meeting Jean

After passing his 11+, Doug gained a place at the prestigious Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School where his love of Spain and all things Spanish originated. Doug then progressed to Manchester University to study for a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Modern Languages. Whilst at university, he met and fell in love with Jean Mary Smith who was also studying there.

Marriage and Family life

Doug and Jean married on 28th December 1963 so easily clocked up over sixty years of marriage. In 1966 and 1969, these two herberts arrived, namely Nigel and Paul and the Smith household was complete. The family moved from Formby, Lancashire to North Harrow in 1971 with Jean and Doug remaining there until 2007.

Working life

Doug had a couple of clerical jobs before moving into teaching at Alsop School in Liverpool. However, the majority of his career in education was spent at Cardinal Hinsley in Harlesden in the modern languages department. He went on to become the department's head and eventually the acting deputy headmaster. Doug acquired many lifelong friends - a pint never too far away (and possibly a Gin & Bitter Lemon Gary?)

Post-teaching and retirement

After leaving teaching in the late 80's, Doug had some clerical and IT jobs before retiring in 2008. Doug & Jean had moved to Chesham in 2007 and now had more time to relax and holiday together. In 2012, Doug's granddaughter Isabella was born whom he adored and spent several holidays with her and family in the Canaries & Cyprus. Finally, in 2023, Jean and Doug moved to Cedars Retirement Village in Chorleywood.

Hendon Football Club

Doug first went to see Hendon in 1951 as a thirteen year old and was hooked thereafter. He followed them through their glory years and beyond. Latterly, he became an active member of the Supporters' Trust helping out on the turnstiles for a number of seasons. He followed them to the end, including a visit to see them beat Oldham Athletic in the FA Trophy in January 2024. Come on you Greens!

Celebration of Life Day - 13 December 2024

Doug's wish was not for a traditional funeral so a Celebration of Life event was held at Cedars Village. The service was conducted by the wonderful Celebrant, Lindsey Peters (https://lindseypeterscelebrant.co.uk/). Many thanks for all the people who attended and those that could not but sent best wishes.

Hendon v Canvey Island, 14 December 2024

Originally Paul & Nigel were going to attend a Hendon game in Dad's honour, however, Hendon Football Club invited the whole family for a fantastic day with Directors' Box treatment and a minute's applause for Dad. The only downside was a 1-0 defeat (well done Canvey...) but some photos and videos of the day are included below.
